An Igorot soldier from Paracelis, Mountain Province, was killed while two other soldiers were wounded in an ambush in Indanan, Sulu on Wednesday morning, August 12.
Killed was 34-year-old Cpl. Aldrin Wanson of the Philippine Army’s 41st Infantry Battalion, 11th Infantry Division. He was shot at the back of his head and was declared dead at the scene.
Wounded were Cpls. Philip Wiga and Benjie Jacinto, who were brought to the Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital for treatment.
Police said the three soldiers were traveling on a motorcycle along the highway in Sitio Kasambuhan, Barangay Tagbak, when two unidentified gunmen aboard another motorcycle followed them and opened fire using a .45-caliber pistol.
The suspects fled toward an unknown direction, while police investigators recovered spent shell casings at the scene.
The 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division condemned the attack and launched pursuit operations in coordination with the Philippine National Police.
Wanson was the son of Marites Assud-Wanson of Bunot, Paracelis, and Almazan Wanson, a native of Tanudan, Kalinga.
The Municipal Government of Paracelis, led by Mayor Marcos G. Ayangwa, expressed condolences to the Assud and Wanson families and honored Cpl. Wanson for his courage, patriotism and service to the country.
