Residents of Itogon, Benguet have condemned the proposed mining expansion known as the Sangilo Mines Expansion (APSA103) Project of Itogon Suyoc Resources, Inc. (ISRI), located in Barangays Ampucao, Virac, and Poblacion, Itogon, Benguet.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Myline Dompines-Sabiano, a local resident, said that the community strongly opposes the project due to its anticipated negative impact on their livelihoods, homes, churches, schools, water sources, and other vital community facilities.
According to Dompines-Sabiano, the project poses a serious threat to the watershed, livelihoods, and overall safety of the community—not only in their barangay but also in neighboring areas.
She also expressed disappointment over the continuation of the project despite the presence of residential communities and critical water sources in the area.
As a result, residents continue to voice their opposition through written statements and by sharing their stand on various social media platforms, as well as through personal and public actions.
While the supposed benefits of mining are acknowledged, Dompines-Sabiano emphasized that the losses to residents would outweigh any potential gains. She questioned the value of improved roads and higher education if livelihoods are destroyed and natural water sources are depleted.
She added that the protection they are fighting for today also serves as protection for future generations.
Meanwhile, a public scoping activity for the proposed Sangilo Mines Expansion (APSA103) Project of ISRI was held earlier today as part of the requirements under the Philippine Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) System for the company’s application for an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC).
The activity was attended by various provincial and local government agencies, including the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), Engineering Office, Mayor’s Office, Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR), and other sectors such as representatives from schools.
Simultaneously, residents from Barangays Ampucao and Poblacion staged a public demonstration to protest the mining project, citing its “irreversible impact” on the environment.
